Introduction I could waste a lot of time here writing about who and what I am and where I've been, and all that uninteresting stuff that most visitors would fall asleep reading, but I won't - see Author Profile here - other than to say that for quite a while now I have been spending a lot of my time writing, and 'Send Them to Hell' was the first of the non-fiction novels that I had published. I initially became interested in the case of the main character of Send Them to Hell - whom I have named Sly - almost two decades ago. He had been arrested on drugs charges some time earlier in one of Bangkok's busiest banks and had been in prison since then, although the end of his trial was still a long way off. A friend of mine, who was also acquainted with Sly, showed me an analysis of the case that was presented to the courts by the prosecutor during the first 12 months of Sly's 5 year long trial, and to be sure that unsettled me quite a bit. As a result I then started to dig a little deeper and what I discovered began a 16-year odyssey through the labyrinth of intrigue, horror and mystery that is part and parcel of the Thai Criminal Justice and Penal systems, and which enlightenment I can say, without a moment's hesitation, was an intense and staggering experience for me; one that has left me with a crystal clear understanding of the absurdity, institutionalised corruption, brutality, almost non-existent concern for even the most rudimentary human and legal rights that most, living in the civilised world, take for granted. This together with an almost endless list of other malfeasance and skulduggery that I found is par-for-the-course within the halls of power and influence. Over the years following my introduction I continued to regularly visit - and quite often to live and do business in - Thailand. As I accumulated data for what I knew must eventually become a horrifying exposition of what actually happens behind the scenes there on a daily basis, it became routine for me to visit and to conduct in depth interviews with the growing network of inmates I gradually become acquainted with, and as they were moved between three of the most notorious prisons there. Sly was eventually convicted and sent to Death Row at Bangkwang Prison in Nonthaburi province, where he remained for several years. During that time I was in regular contact; not only with him, but also several of the others there who were awaiting the executioner's bullet. From them all I was able to put together a catalogue of events and circumstance that often beggared belief. By mid-2002, after travelling from one end of Thailand to the other, spending countless hours interviewing, digging through archives, hunting down and talking to a lot of people, I had a veritable mountain of material to work with and decided that it was time to start putting it into some form of sensible structure. By the time I had finished roughing it out I had a whale of a tale that covered more than 1,000 pages, and still had a ton of stuff that I hadn't so much as touched on. That's when I decided that I had to write two separate stories. Send Them to Hell relates almost entirely to the horrors that are prevalent behind the walls of Thai prisons in general, and how the Royal Thai Police Force and the archaic Thai Judicial System are responsible for - at any given time - around 65,000 innocent people being convicted and imprisoned for crimes that they did not commit. Justice Incorporated goes even further into the depths of the unimaginable, but concentrates more on organised crime and its integration with the official Mafioso that reaps billions of dollars per year from all manner of criminal activity and abuse of authority.

It describes in shocking and brutal detail how very easy it is in Thailand to become entrapped in endless hellish torment; to be murdered by vicious sadistic officials; to be blackmailed and left destitute; to be gang raped at the whim of the corrupt and decadent 'Servants of The People'; to have the most basic of legal and human rights completely ignored; to be used and abused as slaves to produce products for export; to be incarcerated and chained like an animal for years on end even though yet to be convicted of a crime; how corruption and influence replaces justice and how scapegoats are routinely imprisoned or even executed to protect the guilty. Though (possibly contrary to appearances) it is not the intention of this book, or the following volume, Justice Incorporated, to seek to bring discredit to the many truly decent and genuinely religious people who make up Thai society, or to unreservedly bash the Thai culture, the truth has been told. Also, though my being so bold and forthright in my descriptions of various things may have the effect of offending certain factions within, and even without, be assured that the 'R' word played no part at all, and I offer no apologies for laying it on the line as it was, and as it still is. I can only pray that what has been exposed in Send Them to Hell and Justice Incorporated will eventually help somehow to trigger the initiation of long overdue and extensive reform within the Thai Criminal Justice and Penal systems, or at the least encourage those in positions of authority and influence - where ever they might be - to get a wriggle on and do something sensible about putting an end to this insanity.
